    The Breeze broke the story about the JMU 2023 Holocaust Remembrance. The article was published on January 26, 2023, the date on which the event was held.

    In the Faculty Senate meeting, also on January 6, 2023, a letter was introduced written in support of the voices of twenty-four Jewish JMU and local community colleagues who had delivered the open letter HolocaustConcernJMU.2023 to JMU’s President. The letter of support read during the January Faculty Senate meeting is reproduced in its entirety below:

    On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, the Faculty Senate received the attached letter regarding the Holocaust-Centered Lecture Series event that is scheduled for Thursday, January 26, at 6pm at JMU.

    The Faculty Senate supports JMU’s Jewish faculty’s and the Harrisonburg Jewish community’s concerns that their voices have not been heard or respected on the matter of the Holocaust Centered Lecture Series event.

    Moreover, the Faculty Senate supports our Jewish faculty colleagues’ concerns that they have experienced a pattern of efforts by JMU to “repeatedly and actively attempt to silence our voices and make Jewish faculty, staff, and students fear retaliation or reprobation for speaking out.”
